Jazz singer and songwriter Diane Nalini has released four critically-acclaimed CDs with her fifth album, ‘Future Perfect,’ just out. She writes and sings in four languages and has performed at jazz festivals around the world. Diane won second prize in the UK’s Young Jazz Vocalist of the Year awards in 2001, and was nominated for the Grand prix de jazz at the 2002 Montreal International Jazz Festival. Diane has given gala performances for President Bill Clinton and Sir Paul McCartney. The Montreal Gazette writes, “Diane Nalini has the voice, the phrasing, confidence, clarity and control to make a tune her own and turn it into a nuanced thing of beauty.”
She has been heard coast-to-coast in Canada on national radio, including several feature interviews on CBC’s The Sunday Edition as well as Radio-Canada’s Quand le jazz est là. Diane has written or co-written songs that have been used in films, TV shows and video games. Diane is also the resident vocalist with the Ottawa Jazz Orchestra.
Diane teaches jazz singing both privately and in workshops and master classes. She also teaches in Carleton University’s “Learning In Retirement” programme, on topics ranging from the Art of Jazz Singing to the Physics of Music. She has taught songwriting workshops in Canada and the UK.
After misadventures on the nylon string guitar, Diane discovered her “Goldilocks” instrument: the ukulele! Since then, she has been studying with ukulele maestros Sarah Maisel and Craig Chee. She was thrilled to attend a week-long advanced workshop with jazz ukulele legend Benny Chong in 2017 at the Strathmore UkeFest. Diane has taught and performed at the MidWest Uke Camp, the Aurora City Of Lights Festival, Uketober Fest and the Port Townsend Ukulele Fest. She is the founder and director of the online Ukulele Jazz Festival. Diane has developed video lessons for two recent Ukulele Guides published by Ukulele Magazine: Baby Songs and Lullabies for Beginning Ukulele and Traditional Songs for Beginning Ukulele.
